Admission Process

The Northern Lakes College is a publicly governed community college that enrols over 1,864 full-time and part-time students and attracts several international students as well. Programs at Northern Lakes College include various diploma and certificate programs and courses in Academic Upgrading, Apprenticeship Trades, Business and Administrative Studies, Human Services, etc.

The Northern Lakes College accepts applications for three semesters: Fall, Winter and Spring, the semesters generally start in May, September and January respectively. International students are suggested to apply four months before the start of the program through the NLC Application portal or Alberta portal. Students must submit all the required documents properly as mentioned as the college reviews applications only after receiving all the documents.

Applicants also have a way to get admission by clearing the ACCUPLACER assessment test with satisfactory results. The admission team usually sends an email regarding your application status. Accepted students will be emailed with an “Accepted” status and they can confirm their place by paying a non-refundable fee of 300 CAD. Northern Lakes College Admission Deadlines

Northern Lakes College International Student Admissions

International students can apply for any of the programs or courses offered by Continuing Education at Northern Lakes College using the Alberta application portal or the NLC College application and can also choose the desired mode of study through flexible delivery methods. Students must submit all the supporting documents along with their translations properly as the Northern Lakes College begins processing the application only after receiving all the documents. International students are suggested to apply before four months of the start date of the programs.

International students whose native language is other than English must submit proof of English Language Proficiency as all the programs at Northern Lakes College are delivered in English. Visa Process For International Students

International students who wish to study in Canada require a study permit For Canada. International students from India, Pakistan, China, Brazil etc are eligible to apply through the Student Direct Stream. Applications submitted through the Students Direct( Stream will be processed within 20 days upon meeting all the eligibility requirements and submitting your biometrics. Applications through SDS must be submitted online, for submitting biometrics applicants can visit the nearest application centre. Sometimes students may also be interviewed for processing their applications. A study permit is valid for the length of your study program plus an extra 90 days.

Students whose application doesn’t meet the eligibility for the Student Direct Stream will be reviewed as a regular study permit and may take 11 weeks to process your applications. Students can also submit their missing documents by login into their account. Upon acceptance students will receive their study permit at the port of entry or through the mail.

Upon submitting the applications the admission team at the Northern Lakes College sends an email within 24 hours. Based on the information submitted the applicants will be contacted by the admission team if there are any errors in the application or if any information is missing. The admission specialist reviews your application and contacts you if there are any additional requirements needed or if you need a placement test. Generally, it takes two weeks to process the applications and make a decision. Students who are accepted will receive an acceptance letter. Students must pay a non-refundable confirmation fee of 300 CAD that will be later added to their tuition fees. Students must provide a study permit at least three weeks before the start of the program.

Sometimes students who have to meet all the requirements may be kept on the waitlist if the number of seats for the program gets full. Such students will be informed later if seats are made available.

What happens if my study permit is not received on time?

Applications of international students whose study permit fails to arrive on time will be closed. You can re-apply for the next intake to be considered.

What happens if I do not meet the admission requirements for my program?

Your application will be closed if you do not meet the admission requirements. The college may offer you other courses such as academic preparatory courses or career preparation courses etc.

My program has work-study components, what documents do I need to submit?

For practicum based programs students must submit a study permit along with a co-op work permit.

Can I switch to another program after I have been accepted?

All the documents will be re-accessed according to the new program to determine whether you meet the new program admission requirements.

Are there scholarships offered to international students?

At present, there are no scholarships or bursaries available for international students.
