The University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez is a public land-grant university located in Mayaguez. It is the second largest campus of the University of Puerto Rico system, and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The campus was started as the college of agriculture under the University of Puerto Rico in 1911, and was transformed into a fully functional university campus in 1966.

Admission policies at University of Puerto Rico are considered to be moderately selective with an acceptance rate of 67%. Intake sessions at the university are seen to be rolling in the Fall and Summer semesters. UPR-Mayaguez is the only university in Puerto Rico to offer the Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Biotechnology and Doctorate in Marine Sciences.
International students must know that Spanish is the language of instruction in most of the courses offered at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez but students are expected to have a working knowledge of the English language as well.
Admission for an undergraduate degree in this university is based on an admission index formula. The general admission index is based on SAT and is calculated as: 50% of the score based on a high-school academic index, 25% of the mathematical score, and 25% on the verbal score of the admission test. US Visa for International Students
The college has the office of Immigration Affairs which provides assistance and guidance to all international students and scholars. Once accepted into the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, the student needs a student visa to study in the US. To apply for a student visa, the student requires Form I-20 which is issued by the Designated School Official (DSO). DSO doesn’t issue Form I-20 instantly; rather it makes sure the student can meet the requirements given under the form such as:

The first step which the student has to do is submit the evidence of economic solvency wherein the student must demonstrate they have necessary funds (Approx. 20, 882 USD) to cover the expenses of the first academic year. After that, complete the I-20 form and submit the aforementioned evidence to demonstrate your creditworthiness to the office of immigration Affairs. Upon satisfaction, the DSO will issue the Form I-20 to the student and afterward, the student can apply for a visa appointment at their nearest US consulate.
