About Hooghly Women's College

Hooghly Women’s college got established in 1949 in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. It was earlier affiliated to the University of Calcutta until 1962 but later turned its affiliation to the University of Burdwan. It is the sixth academic institution and the first women’s college in the district. It is also the largest Women’s College of Burdwan University. It is a government-sponsored college and is accredited with B++ grade in NAAC. The institute is UGC recognized and consists of various courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce like BA (Hons.), BA (General), B.Sc. (General) and B.Sc. (Hons.) under a number of specializations.

Hooghly Women’s College Admission

Admissions into Hooghly Women’s College are based upon merit marks obtained in 10+2. A student shall check their eligibility criteria before applying for any course. The selection process is entirely based upon academic merit.

Hooghly Women’s College Placement

The placement cell is least engaged and average. One has to strive on their own to get good placement. Internship is not a part of the course. According to NIRF, no students were placed in the past 3 years. Students have to search for jobs after they pass out of college. But owing to competition in the market, more than 50% of the students go for higher studies. 848 out of 1673 students in the past three years have opted for higher education in the college itself.

Following are the scholarship schemes provided by the college:

Dr. Sukanta Ganguly Memorial Award: In memory of Dr. Sukanta Ganguly, Ex-Associate Professor of Pol. Sc. award is given to best 3 Honours students of Political Science of B.A. by the Teacher's Council of the College.
Jadunath Chaudhury Utsaha Dan Tahabil: The best students of B.A Part-III Examination of Philosophy, Sanskrit, and Economics receives a cash prize of Rs. 400/-
Radha Rani Debi Memorial Award: The best student of B.A/B.Sc. Part-III Examination of Geography, English, and Microbiology receive cash prizes.

The college also provides the following financial aid to the students:

Poor students who are meritorious can avail of the facility of free studentship.
From the Students’ Aid Fund, financial assistance is obtained.
As per govt. Order reservations are kept for SC & ST category students.

Various facilities and services are created for the welfare of enrolled students. Some of them are listed below:

Medical facilities: The institute has a Students’ Health Home (SHH) for the support and medical care of the students.
Co-curricular activities: Several college functions, games, debates, seminars take place in the college. It also organizes Inter College Cultural Competition every year.
Value-added courses: In Collaboration with "The Institute of Computer Engineers (India), value-added courses are offered by the College Computer Centre.
Hostel facility: For students who have opted for honor courses are being provided with hostel facility inside the college compound in a two stories building. With UGC special assistance Scheme, a new hostel is under construction.
Library facility: The College consists of a spacious library which is well furnished, resourceful, and well equipped as well. The college library system consists of the Central Library and 17 other Departmental Libraries.
Canteen: Fresh hygienic food items and snacks are provided with a mess facility as well.
Labs: Labs are well equipped, furnished and all the gazettes are also present.
