The institute was founded by Sri Dadi Veerabhadra Rao, an esteemed academician, former minister, and opposition leader in the State Legislative Council of Andhra Pradesh.  It is affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTUK), Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. All the relevant programs of the institute are approved by the All-India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi. It is recognized by the UGC. DIET is one of the preferred and leading institution under Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada. It has been accredited by NAAC with a grade “B+”. and also by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

The institute offers different courses across the 2 streams namely Engineering and Management.
